1958: When a rodeo grounds in Layton was turned down

LAYTON has a rich ranching and agricultural heritage. However, the City has never had a rodeo grounds.
According to Layton historian Harris Adams, the nearest such facility used to be at Davis High School in Kaysville. Years later, that was closed and Syracuse had the nearest rodeo grounds and next was Lagoon and then Farmington, with some Davis County facilities.
A proposal for a rodeo grounds in Layton went before the Layton City Council in the spring of 1958. According to the Weekly Reflex newspaper of April 17, 1958, "Layton council says 'no' on rodeo ground site" was the headline.
Mark Cowley wanted to rezone 10 acres of land located west of the Golden Acres subdivision (actually a trailer court at about 320 South Main Street, on the west side of the highway).
The City Council denied the proposal because of a fear of odors and noise for the surrounding residential developments.

(Note: Any rodeo held in Layton used to utilize the Davis County fairgrounds in Kaysville, near Davis High.)
