VERDELAND Park, the former federal housing area where Commons Park in Layton is now, boasted having both the oldest resident in town and the youngest too after World War II, according to an April 3, 1947 article in the local Weekly Reflex newspaper.
Alta Matilda, 91, was the oldest resident in Layton at the time, while an infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Early Ivery was just three hours old when a census was taken in Layton City by the Jaycees.
This census revealed that Layton had experienced a 400 percent growth in population since 1940, thanks to the influx of new residents because of World War II defense projects in the area.
Layton was counted as having 1,658 males and 1,659 females at the time for a total population of 3,344 residents. There were 821 families and the average family size was 4.07.
Verdeland Park alone contained 1,718 residents.
