Layton's big clean up effort of 1948

Yard waste at today's area landfill in northeast Layton.

"LAYTON delcared a clean town as campaign ends," was an Aug. 23, 1948 headline in the Davis County Clipper newspaper.
A two-week effort that summer included a variety of actions to make Layton both cleaner and safer.
For example, Layton Elementary students turned in 1,500 pounds of waste paper, while Verdeland Park Elementary students collected another 1,000 pounds of waste paper.
Layton Boy Scouts collected eight truck loads of garbage from homes and yards.
All homes in town were checked for fire traps and other hazards.
DDT, an insecticide, was sprayed on community and private property. Some faded warehouses were repainted and many flower gardens in town were spruced up.
LeRoi Day, a sanitation worker for the Davis County Health Department declared that Layton two-week project resulted in a "100 per cent improvement."
A community dance, refreshments and shows were the bonus rewards for the clean up drive.
