Christopher
Layton, the namesake of Layton, Utah, had his “retirement” announced in the
Deseret Evening News.
The Feb. 15,
1898 newspaper carried the headline, “Christopher Layton’s retirement.”
Due to ill
health, this announcement stated that he had retired from the Stake Presidency
of the St. Joseph Stake, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Layton was living in Thatcher, Arizona at the time. It was only repeated
requests from his family that led to his release from church leadership.
Layton died
on August 7, 1898, in Kaysville, Utah, just less than six months from his
release.
