HOW many
other cities or towns are there in the United States named Layton?
It turns out
that “Laytons” are a rarity in America’s 50 different states today.
Historically,
there used to be eight different communities
called Layton, besides Layton, Utah, but there are only three of those left – and only two of those three are listed on either
a Rand McNally or an AAA road map.
Layton, Utah
is by far the largest of the four total “Laytons” and the only one in the
western states.
Here’s a
rundown of the other Laytons:
-From a Rand McNally road atlas
-Florida boasts another bona fide Layton
community. This Layton is located in the Florida Keys, in Monroe County and has
a population of just over 200 residents. This Layton is located some 2,647 miles
from Layton, Utah.
-New Jersey claims the only other map-listed
Layton. It is 2,122 miles distant from Utah’s Layton, in the northwest corner
of the state. Its population is about 300 residents. This is the only “Layton”
outside Utah that has its own Zip Code, at 07851.
-North Dakota has a township called Layton. It was
formed in 1910 and only has about 50 residents today. This Layton is only
listed on a very detailed map, like those of MapQuest or Google. It is the
nearest namesake to Layton, Utah, being 1,025 miles distant.
-Georgia claims its own “Layton” of
sorts, as a populated place located within the City of Folkston, Charlton
County. However, this is not actually its own city or town.
Here’s some
other prominent (and former) Layton
locations within the U.S.:
-Arkansas incudes a Layton cemetery, located
in Yellville, Marion County.
-California has towns named both Laytonville and
Laton.
-South Dakota features a Layton Canyon.
-West Virginia has a Layton Cemetery in
Rensford.
-Four other
states – Indiana, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Virginia used to have townships or
unincorporated places named Layton in the past, but none have remained intact
today.
-According
to the Surname Database, the surname of “Layton” is of old English origin and
was originally derived from these places: “Layton,” found east of Blackpool,
England; from “Latun” in the year 1080 in England; or East and West Layton in
the North Riding of Yorkshire; or “Leyton” in Essex; or “Leighton” in
Bedfordshire; or finally “Laton” in year 1199 in Great Britain.
According to a Google
search, the name Layton is
an English baby name. In English the meaning of the name Layton is
herb garden, or meadow farm.
And, according to “My
Heritage,” on the web, there are more than 1.86 million records for the last
name of Layton.
