A stage coach used to run through Layton and there was a log cabin stage station located at today's 128 South Main Street.
According to the Weekly Reflex newspaper of Oct. 2, 1958, From 1857 to 1869, the stage coach station occupied the exact location as today's American Legion building. This western stage coach was drawn by six horses and rumbled for some 500 miles between Salt Lake City and Virginia City, Montana.
Fresh horses for the stage were available at the Layton stage stop. Passengers would purchase fruits and vegetables in Layton. Gold dust from Montana often paid the bill in Layton.
When the railroad arrived in Utah in 1869, the stage coach line ceased, replaced by rail travel.
-Christopher Layton, the City's namesake, also operated the "Prairie House" nearby for about a decade to further cater to stage coach passengers.
