East Layton was tired of living in the shadow of Layton City in the early 1970s.
ACCORDING to
the Ogden Standard-Examiner of March 26, 1971, the town of East Layton was
struggling in the early 1970s. It had an identity crisis, living in the shadow
of the much larger Layton City.
As such, the
East Layton Town Board discussed “the possibility of changing the town’s name
to avoid confusion and economic problems by having it too closely associated
with Layton City,” the story stated.
At that
time, East Layton’s leaders contended that Layton City was receiving more than
its fair share of dog license payments and automobile property tax – because of
confusion about where exactly residents actually lived.
East Layton
had 763 residents in 1971.
No name
change ever occurred, but in 1981 the town merged with Layton City when it had
grown to 3,500 residents.
