The modern gymnasium for Central Davis Junior High School.
CENTRAL Davis Junior High School in Layton wasn’t always known as such. It was
originally titled Layton Junior High School.
The school
was dedicated on Jan. 24, 1955. School had begun at the $680,000 facility the
previous September, with 675 students from not just Layton, but also portions
of Kaysville and Farmington too.
Richard S.
Stevenson was the original principal of the school. At first, the school only
had 15 classrooms, 24 teachers, six cooks and three custodians, according to
the Ogden Standard-Examiner of Jan. 20, 1955.

Speakers at
the actual dedication ceremony included Golden F. Layton of the school board;
G. Harold Holt, assistant Davis School Superintendent; and architect Paul
Hodgson.
Alan Blood
of Kaysville, president of the LDS Church’s Davis Stake, offered the dedicatory
prayer for the new school. Musical numbers were provided by the new school’s
band.
After the
dedication ceremony, the Layton Junior Pep Club gave tours of the new school to
the public.
(By the time
North Layton Junior High School opened in the 1970s, Layton Junior was retitled
Central Davis.)
