LAYTON City
has seen dozens and dozens of restaurants come and go during its long history.
What is the
oldest surviving restaurant? If you don’t count some long lapses in operation,
it is easily Sill’s Café.
Golden C.
and Genevieve Sill opened Sill’s Café at 281 South Main in 1954. (Some sources
claim Sill’s technically began even earlier by taking over Nellean’s Café at 13
East Gentile and operating under that name for a number of years.
Sill's Cafe had to relocate because of Layton Parkway development.
(From the Heritage Museum of Layton's photo collection.)
The
construction of the Layton Parkway forced Sill’s to relocate. It closed in 2009
and relocated months later at its current 335 East Gentile Street site (a former
Pizza Hut building).

(NOTE: Stockman's Bar, 80 N. Main Street, is not primarily a restaurant, but it does serve lunch and dinner and opened in 1948.)
If lapses matter, then Denny's, by the Layton Hills Mall, dates back to 1980.

(Some newer
Layton residents somehow believe that Burger Stop is a very old Layton eatery.
However, it began in 1993.)
The Dipper, 392 N. Main operated from about 1951 to 1960. Dell Adams began the burger place and Ned Nalder took over operations in March of 1957. It was just south of the Layton Drive In theater.

NOTE that some more restaurants in Layton may close due to shutdowns and a loss of business from the pandemic of 2020.
