The Dipper Drive, long since closed, was near 350 S. Main Street. Just to the north was the Layton Drive-In Theater. Note the theater screen rising near the right top section of this picture.

LAYTON, Utah used to have two, yes, TWO Drive-In movie theaters in town.
The Davis Drive-In is well known, having existed for some 41 years, from 1945 to 1991 at 1200 North Main Street.
The far lesser known theater was the Layton Drive-In, which only lasted for six seasons, from 1950 to 1955, at about 600 North Main.
Only about a half-mile separated the two theaters.
The Layton Drive-In premiered on April 20, 1950 and was just north of the Dipper hamburger restaurant.
Why did the Layton Drive-In close" It was under new management for 1954 season and faced fierce competition from the alaready established Davis Drive-In. In essence, Layton wasn't big enough in the mid 1950s for two such theaters. (Layton only had about 5,000 residents in 1955.)
The Layton Drive-In even featured live outdoor wrestling matches in its final seasons, but that wasn't enough to make it profitable.
Today, Young Kia auto dealership and Chuck E. Cheese are located on that same piece of property.
The Davis Drive-In continued for another 36 years. It was the rising costs for renting movies, plus the opening of the Layton 10-plex indoor theater in 1990 that doomed the Davis Drive-In.
