A thumbnail history of Layton's 2 golf courses

LAYTON City boasts two golf courses. However, before 1974, it didn’t have any courses.
Here’s a thumbnail history of the three courses:
-Ground was broken for the Valley View Golf Course, 2501 East Gentile Street, back in 1972. Layton city bought the land for the course and Davis County developed the facility. The land for the course cost $500,000. The course sits on 210 acres (and Layton City had purchased an additional 90 acres of adjoining land).
The first nine holes of the course opened on August 31, 1974. It opened as a 72-par course with 44 traps and three lakes.
-Layton’s second golf course, Sun Hills, 1250 E. 3185 North, opened in late summer of 1995. This 18-hole course is located on a hillside in northeast Layton.

-LAYTON BOASTED 3 GOLF COURSES AT ONE TIME: The Swan Lakes Golf Course, 850 North 2200 West, opened in 1993 and closed after the 2019 season. It sat on the former Ellison Farm and was 44 acres in size. This was only a 9-hole course.
The land had to be rezoned in 1992 from agricultural to manufacturing to accommodate the golf course usage. It was rezoned to residential in 2018 and homes are going in where the golf course used to be.

The many trees around the former Swan Lakes Golf Course.

Most trees removed from former Swan Lakes Golf Course in November of 2019, pending a large residential development underway.
