Layton's first garbage dumps were in hollows

The current Layton landfill, in the extreme northeast section of the City, is also for all of Morgan County and most of Davis County (except Bountiful).

THE first garbage dump in Layton was located just south of Gordon Avenue at Church Street.
Layton historian Harris Adams said that's where the first garbage dump in the city was, in the early 20th Century. It was in a hollow and was simply filled up for ground level.
Then, another hollow was used for waste. This one was located just south of Highway 193, near 2500 North. (Today, Layton Christian Academy, Apple Village Assisted Living Center, plus some homes are located. Again, a hollow in the area was filled with waste.
After that, in 1956, Layton and neighboring Clearfield City moved their solid waste disposal to where it is today -- in the extreme northeast section of the City. Adams said his father, a member of the Davis County Commission, was instrumental in getting the current modern landfill established.
Today, a special service district, Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District, operates this landfill.
