1958: When Layton City had a seasonal ice skating rink

Today, Ogden and Bountiful are the nearest skating rinks to Layton.

LAYTON used to have one official and one unofficial ice skating rink in town in the late 1950s.
The Weekly Reflex newspaper of Dec. 11, 1958, stated that, "City employees are preparing an area north of the city administrative building in Verdeland Park (today's Commons Park) for flooding as soon as the water will keep frozen solid."
According to Harris Adams, Layton historian, this Layton city ice rink is located approximately where the baseball diamonds are found today, north of the Surf 'n Swim bubble.
A less used skating area was where the former Layton Drive-In theater used to be. That's just south of where Hill Field Road and Main Street connect, at about 450 North Main Street.
How many years these area were used for ice skating is not known, but likely liability issues and supervision problems would have doomed them at some point in the future, if they didn't disappear for other reasons.
