The origin of Hill Air Force Base's name

HILL Air Force Base is indeed located on a hill above Layton and Clearfield cities. However, that is not where its name originated from.
“Honoring the memory of Major Poyer P. Hill, who in 1935 gave his life in Army Air Service, the Ogden Ordinance Air Depot, located at Sunset, Davis County, was named last week and will be known as Hill Field,” the Davis County Clipper of Dec. 8, 1939 reported.
A 650-foot-deep artesian well was also drilled for the base’s water supply, at a cost of $8,937.
By February of 1940, Hill Field was approved for $3.3 million in expenditures to construct a warehouse, commissary, shop and garage.
