1921: When Layton's first sidewalks were installed

Layton Drug Store on Main Street in the 1910s. No sidewalks existed then, just wooden boardwalks in the front of businesses.

IT is easy to take many things for granted. For example, take sidewalks. A century ago they didn't even exist in
Layton City as dirt or mud dominated a walk through town.
Even the City's first sidewalks weren't like today – they consisted of long stretches of cinders spread around.
According to the Ogden Standard Examiner of March 3, 1921, Layton City's first "sidewalks" appeared that year.
"The Town Government has surfaced considerable sidewalk with cinders and is now preparing to construct many
sidewalks," the story stated.
These first cinder walks were constructed on the south end of Main Street.
Concrete sidewalks, used today, didn't exist in Layton until several decades later.
