"INFLUX of Japanese in Davis County towns draws ire of citizenry" was an April 2, 1942 headline in the Weekly Reflex newspaper of Kaysville-Bountiful.
Great numbers of Japanese were evacuating California at the time and moving to Utah. With the nation at war with Japan, that didn't settle well with many residents of Davis County, including Layton.
The newspaper article reported that a meeting was held with the Layton Town Board to discuss the concerns. "Speakers asserted that it was not only a war with a country, but that it was a race and religious war, which made it very bad," the article stated.
Notwithstanding, with all the labor shortages around for farming and factories, the Japanese available to work was a very handy situation. The Layton Town Board agreed to study the issue further, especially since one Japanese family wanted to open a restaurant in Layton.
All over Davis County, Japanese had purchased some key farmland and that was also alarming to some residents.
