What are the oldest businesses and restaurants in Layton?

Tanner Clinic, with roots going back to 1916.

BEFORE 2019, the oldest business in Layton was a shoo-in -- First National Bank, 12 South Main. Dating back to 1905, no other business in town had operated for so long – some 114 years However, in March of 2019, First National Bank sold out to Glacier Bancorp Inc. of Montana and ended that superlative. The bank is now titled, First Community Bank Utah.
So, what is the oldest continuously operated business in Layton City?
This business dates back to 1916, some four years before Layton even incorporated as a city.
Tanner Clinic began in a brick house at 418 West Gentile Street, with Dr. A.Z. Tanner. He lived there and had a separate office and waiting room. After his passing, a son, Dr. Noall Z. Tanner used the office until 1947, when the title of Tanner Memorial Clinic was used for a new building at 317 West Gentile that year. (Noall Tanner had been a doctor working with his father since 1937.)
This new medical clinic was just across the street from Layton Elementary School. Two other doctors, Dr. Joseph B. Tanner and Dr. Dean W. Tanner joined Dr. Noall Z. Tanner at this clinic. It also boasted a complete laboratory, operating room for minor surgery and emergency room. The doctors made a lot of house calls in those early years and survived other area communities too, like Syracuse and West Point.
Jump ahead to December of 1977 and Tanner Clinic relocated to its current flagship location of 2121 North 1700 West.
Dr. Noall Tanner had also led the charge to get a hospital built in Layton and Humana constructed it in 1976, a year ahead of Tanner Memorial’s new facility. (He was also instrumental in getting a hospital in Bountiful and Brigham City.)
The new clinic had 13 total doctors and other providers, like a dentist’s office and a pharmacy.
Dr. Noall Z. Tanner retired in 1985, after a 50-plus year career and more than 6,000 babies delivered.
Tanner Clinic expanded its building extensively over the decades and its large parking lot is now often full.
As of 2020, Tanner Clinic has a satellite clinic in East Layton, as well as similar other clinics in Clinton, Roy, Syracuse and Murray. Tanner also has land in south Layton, near Intermountain Hospital, for another future satellite clinic. Its staff of doctors now totals more than 130, with more than 30 specialties represented.
-And, going further backward in time, the original Dr. Tanner, “A.Z.” began his career in Layton even earlier than 1916. He was one of the doctors in Layton’s first hospital, at 27 South Main Street. This was starting in 1911 and upstairs in the Ernest Layton Building. Dr. Walter Whitlock, Dr. Fedrick Clift and a “Dr. Heath” were the other physicians in this first Layton hospital.

Today, a great grandson-in-law, Spencer Carter, still operates the nearly century old company.
