THE Wasatch
Mountains, east of Layton, are spectacular and offer many recreational
opportunities. From hiking Adams Canyon; to picnicking at Fernwood; to climbing
to Thurston Peak; and to the sweeping views of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail,
there is something for everyone. There are also two obscure cabins found in the
mountains above Layton City.
The
“Fernwood Cabin” and also the “Adams Canyon Cabin” are two separate structures
on the mountainside.
The Fernwood
Cabin is northeast of the Fernwood Picnic area, at an elevation of 6,729 feet
above sea level. It is said to have been built by Frank Williams and sons for
use during the hunting season. It boasts a door, windows and even a stove. The
cabin is on National Forest Service Land and is about a four-mile roundtrip
strenuous hike.
The Adams
Canyon Cabin is approximately a very steep, six-mile trek roundtrip and is best
accessed by the ridge on the north side of Adams Canyon. It is northeast of the
Adams Canyon upper waterfall at an elevation of about 7,700 feet above sea
level.
This cabin
is said to have been constructed by the Morgan Family from Layton and is also a
nearly year-round hiking destination, according to various sources on the Web.
-Both cabins
can be verified and located on Google Maps at this address:
(There is
also a third cabin located above Fruit Heights, called Holmes Cabin, so Layton’s
two cabins are not unique in the area.)
